The trio of Robinson-Newcombe-Campanella not only won at least one Most Valuable Player Award and played on championship teams, but they also championed the efforts of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Just weeks before Dr. King was assassinated in Memphis, TN, Newcombe hosted a dinner at his home in Los Angeles where the four met. "Dr. King told us," Newcombe said, "You'll never know how much easier you and Jackie and (Larry) Doby (the first black American League player) and Campy made it for me to do my job by what you did on the baseball field."
