On May 28, 1957, National League owners voted unanimously to allow the Dodgers to leave Brooklyn and the Giants to leave Upper Manhattan beginning with the 1958 season. The Dodgers played their first game in Los Angeles on April 18, 1958, beating the Giants in front of 78,672 fans. The Dodgers - under different nicknames including the Brooklyn Trolley Dodgers beginning in 1895 - had been part of the fabric of Brooklyn since 1884. The franchise - even without a World Series win during its first 70 years -  was an institution. The fan base was crushed by the departure. Once relocated, the Dodgers would play four seasons at the Los Angeles Coliseum. Dodger Stadium opened in 1962 and is still a magnificent baseball showpiece that continues to get better through time, investment, and constructive ingenuity.
