Perennial all-star and all-time Dodger great, Gil Hodges is Ned Colletti’s starting first baseman. Hodges’ baseball heroics are well known. Hodges was a mainstay of the Boys of Summer, excelling in both offense and defense. Hobrecht’s “Hall of Fame Man” features Gil prominently at Ebbets Field, with “backup” first baseman Steve Garvey and Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson (who played first base for the Dodgers before Hodges took over) warming up in the background.
But it is Gil Hodges, the man, who Hobrecht also captures in his painting. Jackie Robinson described Hodges as “the core of the Brooklyn Dodgers.” Hall of Famer Duke Snider said “Gil was a great player, but an even greater man.” And Hall of Famer Roy Campanella described Gil as a “Hall of Fame man.” Hodges put his baseball career on hold to join the Marine Corps and serve in World War II, receiving a Bronze Star for heroism under fire. Look closely at the painting and you’ll see where Hobrecht has depicted that Bronze Star. Sadly, Hodges died from a heart attack at only 47. His legend lives on through Hobrecht’s art.
