In the top of the eighth inning of Game 1, in the 1955 World Series, with the Yankees leading by two runs with two outs and a 1-0 count on pinch-hitter Frank Kellert, Robinson broke for home against Yanks left-hander Whitey Ford. Home plate umpire, Bill Summers yells, “SAFE!” Yogi, Yells, “OUT!” But as Jackie saw the call, he just got up and jogged back into the Dodgers dugout while Yogi continues to argue with Summers. As Yogi has often said, “It ain’t over till it’s over.” The Yankees went onto win the game 6-5 but the Brooklyn Dodgers went on to win their first franchise history World Series in Game Seven.
By breaking down the color barrier in Major League Baseball, Jackie Robinson opened the door for players of all races, religions, and ethnicities to play the game they love at the highest level. Men like Sandy Koufax, Roy Campanella, Chan Ho Park, and Fernando Valenzuela (among countless others) were able to become a part of Major League Baseball and have successful careers thanks to the brave actions of Jackie Robinson. His legacy extends far beyond the diamond and will never be forgotten. This is a legendary painting for a legendary man.
